So yesterday we had a tour of Vergina and some of Thessaloniki although it was raining so we didn't get to do as much as they had planned. Vergina is where Alexander the Great's family tomb is. They're pretty sure that his father, Phillip II, is buried there and his son. It was pretty cool because when someone dies they dig underground and the deeper it is the more important the person was so this was really deep. Then they build like a temple thing underground with the remains and stuff donated to them and bury it underground to make a big artificial hill. It was pretty much their own version of the Egyptian pyramids.
We saw a church next, but there were roman baths underneath so that was cool. There used to be a huge Jewish population in Thessaloniki but not very many came back after the holocaust. Now 92% of the city is Greek Orthodox but only 20% go to church apparently.
Last on our tour we drove up to the upper old city. It was crazy steep and windy, the streets were tiny and we were in a huge bus. There are all these ruins of huge walls from when the Turks were there I think. I really want to go back there and walk around.
At night the school took us out to dinner, one of our last free meals so we ate a ton. We went to a taverna so you eat family style usually. They just kept bringing out tons of food: bread, salad, cheese stuff, kabobs, chicken, grape leaves, and then dessert. The dessert is soooo good here and there are tons of bakeries and pastry shops.
